A lot of countries in the middle east―and hopefully elsewhere―are moving rapidly towards democracy but will not have time to work out the type of legal documents that would be optimal for the rest of the world and/or the citizens of that country. It is not a good idea to let vested interests dominate that process. So why not open it up to the world?
Is it possible that we could have an open-source "Constitution and Bill of Rights" sort of document operating something like Wikipedia? That the world could/should collectively build a document that when someone in Tunisia or Egypt or ? needs to move towards a form of government different from what they have had in the past, they will have a template to choose or reject as they wish―but they will at least have a template to start work with, to create dialogue from, and to refer back to when the process begins.
And it would be an extremely good thing if when someone―say in Syria right now―goes on the web they should find a document that is being created for them by people all around the world―and that they themselves can have input to that document as part of the process. It would be encouraging and enriching and supportive all at the same time. And it would take the process out of the hands of the politicians and narrow-interest groups. Although they could still do their part: If Obama or Harper (or some fundamentalist religious group or Nazis or ?) wanted to offer a contribution, they could do so. But their contribution would be no more important than that of an intelligent home-less person who has access to the Web.
I can’t―but is there someone out there who can start this process?
